Transgender Day of Remembrance Interfaith Service

Thursday, November 19, 2019, 7:00 PM

All Are Welcome to Join in this Observance of Remembrance, Mourning, and Affirmation.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. With this service we raise public awareness, mourn and honor the lives of our transgender and gender non-conforming kin and we express love and respect in the face of national indifference and hatred.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgenderwoman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Let us gather via Zoom for this essential work which will move us through lamentation to solidarity and support. Questions can be directed to Rev. Anya Sammler-Michael at revanya@uumontclair.org.
