Screening of “American Violet”

The Undoing Racism Committee invites you to join them for a screening of “American Violet” on Friday, March 1st, in the Sanctuary. This film is a powerful depiction of a true event in 2000 which took place in Texas in which a single African-American mother is wrongly accused of dealing drugs. She rejects agreeing to plea bargaining and decides to fight false charges with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). This well-acted important film enlightens us as to federal quotas that encourage indiscriminate drug raids, the US prison system and the destruction of lives as a result of plea bargaining. Meet Jeanne LoCicero, Deputy Legal Director, ACLU-NJ who will present the film and lead discussion after the viewing. A reception will be held at 6:30 PM with the film beginning at 7:00 PM. Donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, please contact Felice Celikyol at (973) 744-0974 or Dolores Davis at (973) 509-0694. Upcoming films sponsored by the URC include PRISONTOWN USA (April 5th), OMAR & PETE (May 17th) and MIDDLE OF NOWHERE (June 21st).
