From Denise Rodgers, Board of Trustees Vice President
The noted analytic philosopher Patricia Churchland said, “Being engaged in some way for the good of the community, whatever that community, is a factor in a meaningful life. We long to belong, and belonging and caring anchors our sense of place in the universe.”
The theme for this year at UUCM is “ENGAGED” while the theme for the month of October is “BELONGING”. As a Board, when we think about being engaged, we strive to be engaged in several domains. We want to be inward, outward and forward looking in our engagement. We seek to make our congregation a more welcoming, diverse, and spiritually fulfilling place as we strive to find deeper meaning and connection in our lives looking inward at UUCM. We seek to make our community, larger society and the world more safe, just and equitable as we look outward. And we seek to grow in numbers, to become more financially secure, and to cultivate the next generation of Unitarian Universalists as we look forward to the future. Our success in these endeavors is dependent on each of you, our fellow worshippers, as we ask you to be engaged for the good of the community. Through this engagement many of us will find our sense of place in the universe through our sense of belonging and caring here at UUCM.
One concrete act of engagement with UUCM is attendance at the Special Congregational Meeting on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 12:30 PM in the Sanctuary. During this meeting we will provide an update on the Strategic Planning Process and members will be asked to vote on our new Vision Statement. We hope that you have found opportunities to share your thoughts about our strategic direction moving forward as we look forward to voting on our new strategic plan during the Annual Congregational Meeting on May 31, 2020.
Grace Lee Boggs said, “You cannot change any society unless you take responsibility for it, unless you see yourself as belonging to it and responsible for changing it.” I would add that we cannot make UUCM even better unless we all take responsibility for it and see ourselves as belonging to it. We look forward to seeing you on the 6th!
