On That Note…

On That Note…

“It is institutions that help us to preserve decency. They need our help as well. Do not speak of ‘our institutions’ unless you make them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions do not protect themselves. They fall one after the other unless each is defended from the beginning. So choose an institution you care about – a court, a newspaper, a law, a labor union – and take its side.”

– Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century

If you are like me, you have been wondering what to do about the state of our democracy in these times. We all know we need to do something… but what exactly is a good use of our precious time and resources that can actually make a difference?

One thing that not only strengthens our society but also benefits our own well-being is coming together on a regular basis with like-minded people. Being in relationship and conversation, and synchronizing our very breaths by singing together – these are powerful ways to affirm our willingness to align ourselves with our community and the ideals we value. When things seem bleak to me, entering our building and seeing your faces renews my sense of hope and possibility.

Thank you for showing up, still and again.
