ENGAGED THEOLOGY SERIES – GREAT WORKS

Táin Bó Cúailnge, an 8th Century Irish Epic

The Autumn 2019 Great Works Series will examine the Táin Bó Cúailnge (tawn bo cullen). This too-seldom-read epic shares the stories of the hero Cúchulainn, a complicated hero who struggles to find a noble person worth serving. It shows the dangers of creating a warrior class and how much damage can be done when we give powerful people our freedom, our fortune and our permission to do as they please.

We will include some lecture about Irish history and literature, but primarily we will read and respond to the text itself. We recommend using the translation from Irish poet Thomas Kinsella, which can be found here. You will also have the option to purchase the book during your registration for $11.

The course meets on six consecutive Wednesdays beginning Sept 25, from 730-9pm, in the Peierls Room. A $10 registration fee is requested. Great Works classes fill up fast, so register today. ~ And if any of you speak ancient Irish or know about this text, please contact Rev Scott!
