The Undoing Racism Committee is sponsoring an event about an important social justice issue that many people are not aware of — solitary confinement in NJ and US prisons. It will be held on Sunday, May 15th, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM at UUCM. There is no charge, and a light lunch will be served. Headline Speaker will be NJ State Senator Raymond Lesniak, sponsor of S.51 restricting solitary confinement and co-sponsor of other criminal justice reform measures. The issue is that most people think prisoners only go into solitary if they violate a major prison rule, the reality is that NJ and prisons across the US use it quite frequently for minor offenses, it is torture, and it causes mental illness, only contributing to someone’s inability to readjust to society after they’ve served their sentence. If you’ve never heard Senator Lesniak speak, this is a good opportunity, and we are thrilled to have him confirmed for this event. For more information, please click here or contact Diane Finn.
