On That Note… – March 2014

Last month I conducted a concert production of the musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” one of my very favorite shows. It revolves around the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat. Even if you were not familiar with the title, you would probably recognize the picture immediately; it is a world famous work of art.

Like many other creations ahead of its time, Seurat’s painting was ridiculed by most people when it was presented to the public. It was simply too different, too far outside the norms of what was deemed acceptable.

Today we smile patronizingly at the small-mindedness of our ancestors. And yet, I wonder: how many times have we dismissed new inventions or ideas that may be considered obvious a few decades from now?

Food for thought.

In the meantime, we are in the planning stages for one of the latest new UUCM traditions: the second annual FUUn Prom. If you have wanted to get involved in a project that is worthwhile, fun, and meaningful, here is your chance. You’ll be hearing more about it in the weeks to come. For now, make sure to mark your calendars for the evening of Friday, May 16th. If last year’s event is any indication, it’s going to be a lot of fun, raise money for our congregation, and contribute to building this beautiful community. Now that’s a worthwhile endeavor in my book!
