Religious Education
Looking Forward
It may seem hard to believe, but our Religious Education programming for the 2011-2012 year is beginning to wind down, and June will be here before we know it. Before our summer RE program gets underway, we still have some important events coming up, as well as continuing our recruitment of teaching teams for next year’s RE classes.
On May 6th, our Coming of Age students will be presenting their Credos to the congregation. This is certainly a service you will not want to miss. 4th grade thru Senior Youth students will stay in service while nursery through 3rd grade will have regular class.
- Our Annual Congregational meeting will be held on May 20th at 10:00 AM. RE will have combined classes from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by special programming for K-5 in the Peierls room from 11:00 to 12 noon.
- On Memorial Day weekend, May 27th, there will be one 10:00 AM service, with nursery care provided for children 3 ½ years and younger only. No regular RE classes will be held.
Some of you have expressed delight at the new way we will be configuring our teaching teams – a core group of 3 or 4 teachers (depending on the grade) that will teach all year on a two-week-on one-week-off schedule. This way of teaching allows for a deeper understanding of the curriculum, a stronger connection to the students, and a consistency that will encourage growth and understanding for all involved. It is definitely a win-win situation for both students and teachers, and really, for our congregation as a whole. The more engaged our congregants are, the stronger our commitment to UUCM and each other grows.
There are some who have expressed their displeasure at the change to our program, and that is completely understandable. Change requires pushing out of your comfort zone to envision a new, possibly scary way of doing things. However, we must remember -- this change is expected to prove more beneficial to our students. We need volunteers to make it happen. We need YOU to make it happen. I have quite a number of years experience teaching with this model and I am happy to speak about this in further detail. Come visit me at RE table during Coffee Hour.
See you Sunday,
