From the Green Sanctuary Committee

At the Green Sanctuary we are concerned with keeping our lives in alignment with the knowledge that we have "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part." This insight guides us to make personal and political choices to sustain the web of life for all beings on an ongoing basis. As we have been learning more about global warming as something to be concerned about, we need to consider what the experts say about the possibility of the potential impact of increased production of oil from Tar Sands in Canada.

According to top NASA climatologist James Hansen, if President Obama approves the building of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Texas, the level of 350 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere will be passed. This level is considered to be the mark past which the impact of global warming will be tremendous and most likely not reversible. All major environmental agencies agree on this.

To raise awareness about this project, a large civil disobedience protest recently took place in Washington DC. 1,243 people were arrested (including our own Susan Krcmar had the privilege to be one of them) to bring attention to this monumental issue, asking President Obama not to allow this project. Nine Nobel Peace Laureates, including the Dalai Lama and Bishop Tutu, sent a signed letter to President Obama asking him to stop the proposed pipeline construction. It is the President's decision; he is under extreme pressure from the huge oil industry but he needs to hear from all of us! He alone decides if this dangerous pipeline will be built or not. Congress is not involved.

Please do your part! Visit: www.dirtyoilsands.org for information about this issue. Please click on Take Action; it will enable you to send a letter to President Obama and please share this information with your family and friends! Visit youtube.com for a video which is done very well visually. As you watch it, remember that this oil extraction means ethnocide for native people who live on the land; their water is poisoned, their lifestyle is completely changed and they are dying of unusual cancers in great numbers! We are concerned for them and for everyone on earth who will suffer more severe climate change if this oil is allowed to be extracted from the earth and used.

Do this for your sake, for the sake of the future and the next generations, and for our great Mother Earth!
