Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
The Interfaith Hospitality Network is a program which has an excellent record of serving families by providing safe temporary shelter (in area churches, synagogues, and societies) and in the assistance of finding permanent housing (and employment, if needed). While families did not stay at our church, our congregation continued to work with IHN of Essex County as a support congregation when families stayed at the Union Congregational church. A small group of 2-5 individuals answered the call to volunteer cooking, helping out with homework, providing art activities, and sleeping over. [Another church where we used to volunteer, Bloomfield Presbyterian, dropped out of the program as a host congregation this past year due to lagging congregational support.] Our goal in 99/00 will be a call to recommit us as a congregation in support of this important service.
