STRAIGHT TALK ON CLASSICAL MUSIC
( and gossip about its composers, too!)

Classical music wasn’t always “classic” -- each style was once new! This musical survey, conducted in lecture-recital format, will explore how great composers continually changed the language of classical music. Each composer's music offers different values, and this workshop is intended to help the uninitiated to find these values more easily. The course will also unapologetically delve into the composers' personal lives, and the pressures their times placed upon them. Come find the answers to who composed his bi-polar syndrome into his music? Who played in brothels? Whose lover trashed him in a novel? We are sure that you will come away from this workshop with enhanced listening skills and new understanding of the vibrant, colorful world of classical music!

Maximum Number of Participants: Unlimited

Workshop leader: Joseph Smith is a pianist who records for the Brioso label, writes extensively for major piano magazines, edits piano anthologies, and for two years was featured monthly on NPR’s “Performance Today.” His lectures include the Wagner, Chopin, and Grieg Societies of New York, the American Irish Society, and the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue.

THE CRAFT OF PLAYWRITING

This workshop will cover the basics of playwriting technique, centering on the concepts of dramatic action and conflict. Participants will be given a brief overview of the elements of drama (dramatic action, character, diction, idea, music and spectacle), compose a brief scene, and will then have the scene read and discussed by the participants in the workshop. Participants must bring a pen, some loose leaf paper, and a willingness to write legibly (thereby allowing others to "read" the material).

Maximum number of participants: 12

"WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF...?"
A WORKSHOP IN CREATIVE EXPLORATION FOR ALL OF US

We each create something every day, be it a meal, a memo, a mess, or a masterpiece. When we stop and ask the question, “What would happen if…?,” we open to new creative pathways, and the results are often surprising! In this workshop, we will explore the making of mixed-media art in a wild and woolly way — using materials from the art store, the hardware store, the natural world, and beyond. Come ready to be messy, wacky, (and maybe even destructive!) and delve into the creative process, regardless of the end product. (This is a workshop for all of us — no art experience necessary.) Additional $10 fee for materials.

Maximum number of participants: 10

Workshop leader: Anne Sailer is an artist and teacher who works (and plays) designing healing jewelry, creating mixed-media art, making music and sound, and teaching workshops in creative exploration, gardening, music and more.
