Generation to Generation

Generation to Generation is a monthly article that focuses on UUCM members and who they are.

Lauretta Freeman is a sterling example of our congregation’s recent exploration of “Walk the Walk.”   In many ways, Montclair is the town we love and continues to work to meet the needs of its citizens because of efforts of Lauretta.  Lauretta was first introduced to our congregation when, in 1957, she served as the treasurer of the New Jersey Committee for World Disarmament and Development with Norman Fletcher.  She has been an active member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Essex County Chapter.  She successfully fought to integrate Stephen Street in 1960 when realtors tried to trigger “white flight.”  And seeing a need, Lauretta was a founding member of the Montclair Cooperative School.  She served as its director for 23 years.

An active octogenarian, Lauretta and her business partner are consultants in staff development.  They consult on education for infants and children. She is on the board of the Association for the Education of Young Children.  In town she is a member of the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Committee and produces TV 34 programming about senior issues, “News and View.”  Personally my life has been enriched because she introduced me to the Senior Center in Caldwell where we have shared yoga classes on Mondays and fitness classes on Tuesday and Thursdays. Lauretta also participates in a walking group on Wednesday. Some of these have to give way to her active schedule and weekly folk dancing.

Finally I will give a plug for the Senior Lunch Bunch which meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays in the Peierls Room where Lauretta is a frequent member.  Join us to meet Lauretta and the other fifteen (or more) attendees who always have interesting points of view on scheduled and unscheduled topics.
